Michelle Robinson

Creating has always been an integral part of who I am and is a daily act of joy and calm. Growing up, my days were spent making mud pies beneath the rustling trees, fashioning clothes for my toys from my Mum’s vintage fabric scraps and creating handmade jewellery for sale at the local markets. Nowadays, you’ll find me sketching on streets and sidewalks around rural and urban Australia or in my studio creating. I also crochet and knit blankets for charity, make my own hand made recycled books, up-cycle secondhand retro fabric into contemporary outfits and make art incorporating printmaking, assemblages, ephemera and weavings using predominantly recycled, sustainable and natural materials.

I love to throw myself into all manner of creative pursuits; learning the basics, then breaking the rules! I’m constantly seeking more personal artistic learning and love sharing my insights and suggestions for how to begin creating art. Playing for the sake of the pure delight and learning that unfolds is what I’m all about!

After bravely submitting my very first art entry into SWAP (Sustainable Waste to Art Prize) back in 2017, I was awarded second prize and have been selected as a finalist in the ReMagine recycled art awards until my first personal exhibition in 2023. I am also the Studio Coordinator of a community printmaking group ‘The Press Gang’ and exhibit my work with my fellow artists throughout the community.

Underpinning all of my artistic adventures, is my teaching career that has spanned the last twenty years. Beginning with preschool teaching, then guiding adults overseas, working in a primary school, teaching art in high school workshops, advising university students, coaching teachers to running community art workshops and weekly art classes with elders, I have proudly taught every age group possible! I have also been honoured by receiving a NSW award for teaching excellence, nominated by my teaching colleagues.

I am deeply inspired by the teaching pedagogy offered by the educational professionals in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Recognised worldwide for their holistic view of education and working with ones interests and strengths, learning flourishes. Having immersed myself in professional development from Reggio Emilia’s teachers on two occasions in Italy, I am an advocate for process driven and experiential learning.

I observed very early in my career that creativity is within everyone but often, one may doubt their capacity. With some gentle encouragement, joyful explorations and a positive environment, EVERYONE can discover their own innate talents, creative passions and inspiration. Let me show you how creative you really are!
